"Azerbaijan plays a role of transport corridor in the region," said Farid Shafiyev, chairman of the Center for International Relations Analysis, APA reports.
Touching upon the European Union-Azerbaijan relations, Farid Shafiyev has noted that the EU's reputation has been damaged in recent days.
"Unilateral statement of the European Parliament has caused deep regret in Azerbaijani public," added Chairman of the Center.
F. Shafiyev has noted that the territorial integrity principle is on an international agenda today: "European politicians say that territorial integrities of several countries in the European region are under a danger, face with occupation. But I like to remind that territorial integrity was also violated in Europe in 1992-1993. But we did not see the EU approach for Azerbaijan, which is demonstrated for Ukraine today. Azerbaijani territories remained under occupation for 30 years, cultural-historical heritage was destroyed, but the EU did not react."
According to Farid Shafiyev, some hopes appeared after the trilateral summit in Brussels in December of the previous year, but Europe tries to revive dead "Madrid principles" today and France sounds opinions in this regard at a diplomatic level.
He has brought to attention that the future of the region depends on sustainable peace, cooperation among the three countries.
"I think that the best response to the decision of the European Parliament is signing an agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan as soon as possible. I hope that the agreement will be signed this year," added Farid Shafiyev.
