Esmaeil Baghaei: South Caucasus region is important for Iran

The South Caucasus region is important for Iran, said Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, today at a briefing, APA reports.

Baghaei emphasized the significance of the Iranian defense minister’s visit to Baku and the security consultations: “This region is very important for the Islamic Republic of Iran. We view peace and stability there as a form of our own peace and stability. This visit is a continuation of the foreign minister Araghchi’s visit to Baku some time ago.”

According to him, during the defense minister’s visit, bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense and security was discussed: “We believe that such visits and consultations are necessary to preserve and strengthen trust and mutual understanding among the countries of the region.

In the defense minister’s talks with Azerbaijani officials, a wide range of issues of common interest in the fields of security and defense were discussed. We believe that this visit will improve and strengthen trust between the two countries, especially in the field of security.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson also commented on the visit of the U.S. Vice President to Armenia and Azerbaijan, noting that Tehran’s position on the South Caucasus is very clear.

Esmaeil Baghaei emphasized that Iran has always supported strengthening relations and communication routes among regional countries, but stressed that any initiative that in any way harms the region’s geographical or geopolitical borders is unacceptable for Tehran.

The Foreign Ministry official said such initiatives “do not serve regional security interests.”

“Therefore, both neighboring countries are aware of our concerns and views on this issue. We hope that these considerations will be taken into account when any decisions are made,” Baghaei added.
