“I got acquainted with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in 2005 at an event in Qatar during our face-to-face communication. At that time, I was the Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, now the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. In our first face-to-face meeting, I saw how noble, principled, kind, humane, and determined leader he was,” Former head of Research Centre For Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), former Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu told APA’s bureau in Turkey.

“When I said Mr. Ilham Aliyev that I want Azerbaijan to be active in Organization of Islamic Cooperation he said “We are ready” with pleasure. Next year, we held a meeting of the OIC Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baku. Ilham Aliyev delivered a very impressive speech there. Since then, as OIC, we held one or two events in Baku. Namely, as a result of Ilham Aliyev’s principal Azerbaijan became one of the most active members of this organization,” the diplomat noted.

Ihsanoglu also talked about friendly relations with national leader Heydar Aliyev: “In the early 1990s within the framework of IRCICA in Istanbul we had an event related to the Islamic world, I, as a Secretary-General invited the late President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev, he came. He said there that is why we do not have such an activity in Azerbaijan too? We discussed the event which covers not only Azerbaijan but also all Caucasus and we held a congress in Baku regarding Islamic culture in the Caucasus. Since then our friendship with Heydar Aliyev started, and after his death, this friendship continued with his son.”
