We believe that a special opportunity has arisen for the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, said Karen Donfried, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs during the hearing held at the Foreign Relations Committee of the US House of Representatives, APA reports.

"We think that the window of opportunity is now open. Therefore, we feel that this issue is urgent and urgent.

I think the situation is different today, I think it has to do with Russia's war in Ukraine. This changes the dynamics in the region.

Thus, every time the leadership of the two countries contacts and meets, regardless of whether it is at the level of leaders, heads of foreign affairs, national security advisers, Prime Ministers and deputy ministers, all these contacts are very important," Donfried said.

According to him, the US administration considers it important to intensify such exchanges and dialogues, because in this case both sides will understand each other.

He said that the parties are working on specific issues at different levels during the negotiation process.

"The heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are working on a peace agreement, they hoped that it would be possible by the end of this year. However, it is not yet clear whether this will be possible. The Secretary of State hosted their meeting in Washington in November. Later, they met in Moscow, exchanged views on the peace agreement, and we hope that the ministers will meet again by the end of the year," she said.

According to her, negotiations are underway between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the opening of transport and communications, and this is a very important issue.

"Negotiations regarding the delimitation and demarcation of the borders are underway. At the same time, there are talks about the rights and security of ethnic Armenians in Karabakh. All these are elements of the peace plan. We support these negotiations, we help to create trust and confidence between the parties and put forward their practical approach to the solution," said the Assistant Secretary of State.
