Director of the Geneva International Center for Humanitarian Demining to visit Azerbaijan

Within the framework of his working visit to the Swiss Confederation, Elchin Amirbayov, the Representative of the President of Azerbaijan for Special Assignments, met in the city of Geneva with the Director of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), Ambassador Tobias Privitelli, APA reports.

During the conversation, it was emphasized that this international institution has been a long-term and reliable partner of Azerbaijan in the field of demining.

Providing detailed information to his interlocutor about the scale of the landmine and unexploded ordnance problem in our country and the activities recently carried out by the Azerbaijani state to address it, Elchin Amirbayov noted that our country is open to further expanding the successfully ongoing cooperation with the centre in Geneva.

The parties discussed the importance of the Memorandum of Understanding “On Providing Support to Humanitarian Demining Activities in the Republic of Azerbaijan,” signed on July 7, 2025, between the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action and GICHD, for future cooperation, as well as possible implementation mechanisms, including the possibility of conducting joint trainings with GICHD at ANAMA’s Goygol Training Center, and other practical cooperation opportunities.

Tobias Privitelli highly appreciated the serious and purposeful efforts made by the Azerbaijani side to resolve the landmine problem in Azerbaijan and stated that the centre he leads is ready to further deepen practical cooperation with the National Mine Action Agency in Azerbaijan. In this context, he emphasized the importance of his planned visit to Azerbaijan next week and noted that during the visit, he intends to discuss concrete directions of mutual cooperation with his Azerbaijani colleagues.

Elchin Amirbayov emphasized the importance of Tobias Privitelli’s visit to Azerbaijan in terms of further strengthening bilateral cooperation and recommended that within the framework of the visit, he travel to the liberated territories to become acquainted on the ground with landmine contamination and the demining operations being carried out.
