Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) Sahiba Gafarova met on December 10 with Lord Alderdice, the Trade Envoy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of Azerbaijan, who is visiting the country, the Cabinet of Ministers told APA.
It was noted that today bilateral cooperation between the two countries covers the economy, trade, energy—including renewable energy—education, the defense industry, and other areas. The importance of high-level visits and meetings in the development of bilateral relations was emphasized. In this regard, President Ilham Aliyev’s visits to the United Kingdom and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Azerbaijan last year to participate in COP29 were highlighted as significant for the bilateral cooperation agenda.
During the conversation, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova expressed satisfaction with the development of inter-parliamentary relations between the two countries. She recalled her official visit to the United Kingdom in 2022 and stressed the importance of the meetings and discussions held during that visit for advancing parliamentary ties. It was noted that the Milli Majlis’ working group on inter-parliamentary relations with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is one of the largest groups. Speaker Gafarova emphasized the importance of reciprocal visits and close dialogue in further expanding cooperation between legislative bodies.
Expressing his gratitude for the meeting, Lord Alderdice spoke about the development of cooperation in various areas between the two countries and stressed the importance of further strengthening inter-parliamentary relations.
The guest shared his views on Azerbaijan’s highly favorable geostrategic position, its significant role in the Middle Corridor, new directions and areas for cooperation, and the importance of COP29 hosted by Azerbaijan.
During the discussion, it was noted that there is substantial potential for further developing cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in economic, political, educational, renewable energy, inter-parliamentary, and other fields.
