"Absolutely groundless claims of Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which are full of lies, on Sumgayit events have been responded by our side many times. We stress for the next time that bloody events, committed in Sumgayit city of Azerbaijan USSR at end of February of 1988, was a premeditated and planned provocation against Azerbaijan," said Press Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Leyla Abdullayeva while answering the question of media on a commentary of Armenian MFA's statement on Sumgayit events, APA reports.
“Recall that criminal case has been launched on this issue by the USSR Prosecutor's Office, the investigation has been conducted, as a result, the perpetrators of the revolts and their accomplices, as well as a total of 32 victims, have ben determined. We would like to mention that 6 people among the victims of the incident were Azerbaijanis. We bring to the attention of the Armenian Foreign Ministry that the perpetrator of the incident, who led the march, killed 6 people and tortured 3 women of Armenian descent was Eduard Grigoryan of Armenian descent, and witness testimonies of Armenians living in Sumgayit have been collected about him. A. Grigoryan who has been sentenced to 12 years in prison has been transferred to Armenia to serve his sentence and was later released," said L. Abdullayeva.
