Azerbaijani FM Jeyhun Bayramov has commented on the release of Vardanyan from his “position”,” APA reports.

The minister noted that after the Second Karabakh war, Azerbaijan is speaking about the peace agenda.

“Our state has already turned the black page of our history and stated it is ready to demonstrate the view to the future. In this context, President Ilham Aliyev has had clear, logical, and continuous messages from the first day that the residents of Armenian origin living in Karabakh are ready to start integration into the Azerbaijani society at the social, political and economic levels and regarding the sovereignty of Azerbaijan and the development of the region. Therefore, Azerbaijan’s position on the person who tries to introduce himself as a representative of the Armenian population, was that we were ready to talk with the representatives of the population. However, a person who has nothing to do with Karabakh cannot be a counterpart for us. Vardanyan taking that position was impossible. This took several months. Those who were behind it also understood that this project has no prospects."

The Minister also added that in general, when the decisions related to the reintegration process were discussed, it was repeatedly said that it will be implemented in formats consistent with the Constitution of Azerbaijan and the international agreements to which it is a party.

"In such a case, it should apply to the citizens living in that area. It’s clear that Armenia has been implementing illegal settlement policy for a long time. I think that there is no difference between Vardanyan and illegal settlers, because he did not belong to Karabakh."
