On October 5, the foreign cargo ship “Royad Mammadov” was attacked by a drone in the Black Sea near the coast of Romania, the Press Service of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.
According to information received, Azerbaijani citizen Rustam Ismayil Hasanov, born in 1974, who was the captain of the ship, was killed in the attack. Another Azerbaijani citizen, Mahammad Hamza Suleymanzade, born in 2002, is missing. Relevant search operations are currently underway.
Other Azerbaijani citizens who were members of the ship’s crew were rescued, and three of them were hospitalized.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with Azerbaijan’s diplomatic missions and the competent authorities of the relevant countries regarding the incident. Necessary measures are being taken to provide Azerbaijani citizens with the required medical and consular assistance, as well as to carry out the relevant procedures for repatriating the bodies of the Azerbaijani citizens who were killed.
“We express our deepest condolences to the families and relatives of our compatriots who lost their lives and wish those injured a speedy recovery.
“Once again, we urge Azerbaijani citizens to refrain from travelling to regions where military operations are ongoing and the security situation is unstable, as well as from working in these areas or on means of transport operating along risky routes, particularly ships,” the ministry said.
