Azerbaijan has officially applied for BRICS membership, Aykhan Hajizada, head of the Press Service Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, told APA.
It should be noted that some time ago the Azerbaijani side expressed its desire to join BRICS. Thus, in the "Joint Declaratıon of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People's Republic of China on the establishment of a strategic partnership" adopted on July 3 within the framework of the Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Astana, it is stated that the Azerbaijani side expresses its desire to join the BRICS. It was stated in the Joint Declaration that the Chinese side welcomes Azerbaijan's participation in BRICS cooperation.
It should be added that the organization is called BRICS in accordance with the English initials of the countries that founded it - Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa.
BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Originally identified to highlight investment opportunities, the grouping evolved into an actual geopolitical bloc, with their governments meeting annually at formal summits and coordinating multilateral policies since 2009. Bilateral relations among BRICS are conducted mainly based on non-interference, equality, and mutual benefit.
