Baku-APANicolas Leoz resigned on Tuesday as CONMEBOL president and member of FIFA's executive committee due to health reasons, APA reportts quoting Xinhua.

The 84-year-old Paraguayan, who underwent heart surgery for a fourth time last December, has led South American football's governing body since 1986 and was chairman of FIFA's 2014 World Cup organizing committee.

The announcement came just days before the expected conclusion of a FIFA investigation into football corruption.

"I have invited you to this meeting to share with you my retirement," Leoz said.

"I'm announcing my retirement from all FIFA committees because it's important for my life. A very important committee is the organizing committee for the 2014 World Cup (in Brazil) but important reasons prevent me from staying in that position."

Leoz was accused during a Swiss criminal trial in 2008 of receiving payments from FIFA's former marketing partner ISL, which collapsed in 2001 with a reported debt of 300 million U.S. dollars.

He joins former executive committee colleagues Ricardo Teixeira of Brazil, Jack Warner of Trinidad and Mohamed bin Hammam of Qatar in quitting amid corruption claims.
