Azerbaijan submitted an initiative to prevent 100-120 million human deaths as one of the Sustainable Development Goals before the UN, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ali Ahmadov said during his speech at the 4th SDG Dialogue themed Stakeholder Consultation on 4th Voluntary National Review of Azerbaijan and Women's Economic Empowerment for SDG 5 Acceleration, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, Azerbaijan supports the inclusion of a goal of demining into the UN's globally significant program: "There are currently 100-200 million antipersonnel landmines planted in 60-70 countries of the world. This means that the lives of 100-120 million people are under threat in one-third of the countries that are members of the UN. To understand the magnitude of the scale, it's important to know that during the coronavirus pandemic, according to figures released by international organizations, the number of people who lost their lives was 15 million."

Ali Ahmadov noted that Azerbaijan is one of the countries that is suffering from the threat of landmines. There are 1.5 million landmines planted in the country's territory, resulting in ongoing loss of lives among innocent civilians. In this regard, Azerbaijan will support this SDG goal.
