Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan are preparing to hold an urgent meeting of their military chiefs to discuss ways to support the Kingdom under the Mecca Defense Alliance, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said on Friday, Al Arabiya reports.
The announcement followed a meeting in New York between Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
The three ministers strongly condemned recent attacks targeting Mecca, as well as civilian and economic facilities in Saudi Arabia, and affirmed the Kingdom's right to take measures it deems appropriate to defend its security under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
They also discussed arrangements for the urgent meeting of the three countries' chiefs of staff, which will examine ways of supporting Saudi Arabia under the defense pact.
Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan signed the Mecca Defense Alliance in August. The pact stipulates that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all three. The countries held the first meeting of the agreement's Strategic Political and Defense Committee in Istanbul on August 31 and agreed to establish a general secretariat in Saudi Arabia.
The latest consultations come amid an escalation in Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, including attempts to target Mecca and strikes on civilian and economic infrastructure.
The foreign ministers also stressed the importance of international law, respect for state sovereignty and freedom of maritime navigation, while reiterating their support for efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and reach peaceful solutions to ongoing conflicts.
