NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte believes that, despite the current policies of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, the European Union should not completely abandon cooperation with the United States on defense matters, APA reports, citing the FAZ publication.
Rutte noted that the United States expects Europe to take on greater responsibility and allocate more funds to defense. According to him, the main goal is to accomplish all of this together with the United States.
The NATO Secretary General emphasized that the United States fully supports the Alliance, remains in NATO, and continues its presence in Europe.
“I have absolutely no doubt that the United States fully supports NATO,” he said.
Rutte recalled that at the NATO summit held in The Hague in the summer, all allies committed to increasing defense spending to 5 percent of GDP by 2035.
“This is one of President Trump’s greatest achievements in foreign policy to date,” the NATO Secretary General noted.
Rutte also emphasized that NATO is not made up solely of the United States and EU countries. He cited NATO members such as the United Kingdom, Norway, Canada, and the United States as examples.
“When we speak of Europe and NATO, this is a broader concept than the EU,” he said.
