Official Washington: “Foreign agents” law undermines Georgia’s integration into West-UPDATED

The United States conveyed its concerns to the Georgian government on the submission of the draft law on "Transparency of Foreign Influences" to the parliament in Georgia, a statement by Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Matthew Miller published on the website of U.S. Department of State noted in this regard, APA's Georgian bureau reports.

It notes that the draft law undermines Georgia’s commitment to Euro-Atlantic integration and risks pulling Georgia off its European path.

"We are deeply concerned by the introduction of legislation in the Georgian parliament based on last year’s draft “foreign agents” law. The draft legislation poses a threat to civil society organizations whose work benefits the lives of everyday citizens of Georgia in areas such as health, education, and social support. It undermines Georgia’s commitment to Euro-Atlantic integration and risks pulling Georgia off its European path. We have made these concerns clear to the Georgian government," the statement reads.

The US State Department is deeply concerned that the ruling Georgian Dream party of Georgia will once again submit the draft law on "Transparency of Foreign Influences" (On Foreign Agents) to the parliament, Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Matthew Miller wrote on X, APA reports.

"We are deeply concerned that draft legislation introduced into Georgia’s parliament will derail Georgia from its European path and harm civil society organizations improving the lives of Georgian citizens. We urge the government of Georgia to advance its EU aspirations," the post says.
