Germany is ready to contribute to efforts to maintain a possible ceasefire in Ukraine and, in particular, to deploy its troops on adjacent NATO territory. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced this at a press conference following a meeting of the so-called coalition of the willing in Paris, APA reports.
"Germany will continue to make a political, financial, and military contribution. This could include, for example, declaring a presence of forces in NATO territory adjacent to Ukraine after a ceasefire is reached," he said. "The decision on the type and extent of Germany's contribution must and will be made by the Federal Government and the German Bundestag, once the conditions are clarified," Merz added. "I want to speak for myself and the government: in principle, we are not ruling out anything," the Chancellor emphasized.
"We are, of course, ready to participate in security guarantees," Merz stated, explaining that the form in which this will be done is currently an open question, as the overall package of security guarantees has not yet been finalized. "I will submit proposals to the government and, if necessary, the Bundestag only when a ceasefire is reached and when we, as a coalition of the willing, have agreed on an appropriate joint course of action. We are on the way to achieving this," the Chancellor emphasized.
