The first participants in France’s voluntary military service programme will begin their service in September, President Emmanuel Macron announced during a ceremony in Bormes-les-Mimosas.
According to French media, Macron said a new national service programme would allow young people to serve the interests of the state.
Applications opened in January 2026. During the programme’s first year, France plans to recruit 3,000 volunteers aged between 18 and 25. The service will last 10 months.
Around 2,200 applications have been submitted so far.
The French government plans to increase the number of volunteers to 4,000 in 2027 and 10,000 by 2030.
