Germany’s Konrad Adenauer Foundation has decided to close its office in Tbilisi, APA reports.
The organization said in a statement that the closure of the representative office was a direct consequence of the political and legal environment established by the Georgian government.
“This environment makes it impossible for the Konrad Adenauer Foundation to fulfill its core mission. On July 28, the Georgian government rejected the foundation’s applications for funding projects submitted in accordance with the new Law on Grants,” the statement said.
The foundation noted that active efforts to ensure the continued operation of its Tbilisi office under the new framework, including efforts by the German government, had also been unsuccessful.
The Konrad Adenauer Foundation is closely affiliated with Germany’s conservative Christian Democratic Union party.
Its Tbilisi office had been operating since 2003.
