The Georgian government has begun paying compensation to the Russian energy company Inter RAO, APA's local bureau reports.
The first transfer was made on December 31 last year.
The total amount of compensation is 139 million US dollars. The Georgian side must pay this amount in full by July 10, 2028.
The Georgian government stated that the compensation paid to Inter RAO will not have a negative impact on the country's economy and population.
Note that, according to the memorandum signed between Inter RAO and the then government of Georgia on March 31, 2011, the Georgian side guaranteed the company that electricity tariffs would not change for 15 years. However, in 2014, a decision was made to change the methodology for calculating electricity tariffs in Georgia.
In 2016, Inter RAO appealed to the Georgian government to change tariffs, but was rejected, and in 2017, it took the Georgian government to arbitration. The company said it suffered losses due to changes in electricity tariffs in Georgia. The Georgian government lost two parallel arbitration disputes to the Russian company.
