The Council of the European Union has imposed sanctions on two officials from Russia’s judicial system over human rights violations, APA reports, citing the official website of the Council of the European Union.
The statement said the sanctions were imposed on two individuals — one judge and one prosecutor — over allegations of serious human rights violations, repression of civil society and the democratic opposition, and actions undermining democracy and the rule of law in Russia.
The sanctioned individuals are identified as Dmitry Gordeyev, a judge of the Moscow City Court, and Lyudmila Balandina, a prosecutor.
Both are accused of abusing their official powers to issue politically motivated, biased, and unjust decisions.
Under the decision, the assets of Dmitry Gordeyev and Lyudmila Balandina have been frozen. Citizens of EU member states and companies registered in those countries are prohibited from transferring funds to them. In addition, the sanctioned individuals are banned from traveling to or transiting through EU countries.
