The mega energy projects jointly implemented with Georgia — BTC and the Southern Gas Corridor — play an important role today in ensuring the energy security of the region and Europe and diversifying energy supply routes, Prime Minister Ali Asadov said at the 11th meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Georgia, APA reports.
According to him, Azerbaijani gas is now exported to 16 countries:
"Our cooperation in the electricity sector is developing successfully. Following a serious accident in Georgia's power system in July, Azerbaijan provided prompt support at the request of the Georgian side. Thus, power exchange between the electricity systems was significantly increased and continues at this level. As a successful result of our cooperation in the field of green energy, our countries have now begun establishing a green energy corridor to Europe. This project will also play an important role in Europe's energy security."
Ali Asadov noted that the transport and transit sector is one of the most important areas of cooperation:
"Our countries continue their joint efforts to develop the Middle Corridor. The full commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, an important part of the Middle Corridor, and the increase of its freight handling capacity to 5 million tons are clear examples of our successful cooperation."
The Prime Minister added that the cultural and humanitarian sphere remains one of the main areas of cooperation, as always:
"We hope that construction of the new building of the Tbilisi State Azerbaijani Drama Theatre named after Heydar Aliyev will begin soon. The Azerbaijani and Georgian communities living in our countries play a special role in the development of our relations. Ensuring opportunities for education in their native languages and the operation of relevant schools contribute to further strengthening ties between our peoples."
