"Welcome to Azerbaijan and COP29. I would like to thank the representatives of the participating countries and non-governmental organizations. We want to demonstrate not only the hospitality of Azerbaijan, but also its rich nature," said Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, President of COP29 Mukhtar Babayev at the opening ceremony of COP29, APA reports.
According to Mukhtar Babayev, the environmental program suggests that the temperature has increased by 3 degrees at the global level: "This is a sign of disaster. People on different continents are suffering from this problem. They expect definite steps from us, not discussions on paper. Our plan in this area is to increase ambition and strengthen action. We can increase ambition in the area of financing and attract additional funds. The key here is to increase collective efforts. The new efforts to be defined must include more effective results. We are talking about hundred billions of dollars here. We have 11 days to make a final decision. We understand that the negotiations will not be easy, but we must achieve the main goal of the conference. The results we will achieve should serve the interests of our planet as a whole, not just individual countries. We need to attract investment today to save up tomorrow. Another issue is reaching an agreement on Article 6. I think enough opportunities will emerge at COP29 to take steps forward. Not only financing, but also the provision of life-saving technologies to countries in need plays an important role here. Only then will we be able to achieve our main goal. We must not forget that this is our last chance.”
