Azerbaijan tries to maintain its commitment to the climate agenda and decarbonization plans. Therefore, holding such an event in Azerbaijan is supported by all participating countries, Hasan Nabiyev, climate scientist, and doctor of philosophy in geography said in an interview with APA.

He noted that the agenda of COP29 will be approved till November: “Matters such as climate changes, and funding will be discussed there. Azerbaijani scientists, for sure, can make such proposals during panel discussions on COP29 that are interesting for other countries. Within COP29 developed countries provide financial assistance to developing countries to fight climate change.”

“COP29 is a great event that brings world leaders, government officials, researchers, NGOs, and other interesting parties together to discuss and negotiate climate change issues. The countries that have signed the convention have taken the responsibility to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere by up to 35%. CO2 emissions should be reduced by 40% by 2050.

For example, there were thermal heating plants in Azerbaijan that were working with fuel oil. Azerbaijan switched them all to natural gas. At the same time, the participants of COP29 will see what kind of work Azerbaijan has done in a large territory that it liberated from occupation. Not a single thing that pollutes the environment can be done here. The works done in liberated territories are the best example of the “green economy”.

The scientist noted that currently, the average annual amount of the toxic substances released from the cars to the atmosphere of Baku city has reached 300 thousand tons. “Lead in motor vehicle waste has a dangerous effect on the human body and has highly toxic properties. However, currently, a detailed assessment of these is underway. There is a significant reduction in the amount of waste gases that are released to the atmosphere.”
