The law enforcement system of Armenia is the internal affair of this country and its people, said the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova at a briefing today, speaking about the arrest of Gyumri Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan, APA's Moscow bureau reports.
She noted that it is surprising that statements in Armenia supporting the union state with Russia are considered as a denial of the country's sovereignty, and why the same attitude is not shown to statements on cooperation with the European Union.
Zakharova expressed her surprise that in discussions on the benefits of cooperation with Russia everyone can see calls for the denial of sovereignty.
"Considering the numerous statements by Armenian officials and politicians about Armenia's intention to move towards EU membership, such accusations are especially strange. It is interesting what the country's law enforcement agencies think about this? After all, joining the EU directly implies a restriction of national sovereignty in foreign policy, economy, migration, monetary policy and many other areas," she emphasized at the briefing.
