The release of 13 Russian citizens imprisoned in Azerbaijan could make an important contribution to the normalization of relations between Moscow and Baku, said Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, APA reports, citing the TASS agency.

"The release of Russian citizens is an important step towards the normalization of relations between Russia and Azerbaijan," Zakharova said at a briefing.

According to her, the issue was thoroughly discussed at the meeting of the Russia–Azerbaijan intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation held in Astrakhan on August 22, and the Russian position was conveyed to the Azerbaijani delegation.

Zakharova also recalled that on July 3, 14, and 23, consular staff visited the Russians detained in Baku.

"A request has been sent for a fourth meeting, but the Azerbaijani side has not yet given its consent," she added.
