A power cutoff was reported in entire Yerevan and most of the country at 10:25 am. What looked like a total blackout lasted for 20 to 40 minutes and continued in some locations even beyond. Some problems were reported with traffic in Yerevan as the traffic lights temporarily went off as well as in the Yerevan metro that ground to a halt because of the lack of electricity. Commuters had to be evacuated from underground carriages that stuck in-between stations and many citizens in public places, such as supermarkets, banks, etc., looked confused because of the “power-less” situation.
Deputy Chief of the Rescue Service of the Armenian Ministry of Emergency Situations Nikolay Grigoryan told ArmeniaNow that “a systemic problem” had occurred and that the Armenian provinces and capital Yerevan had been cut of electric power because of that problem.
