US Ambassador: “Accession to the World Trade Organization will be beneficial to Azerbaijan”

Baku. Victoria Dementyeva – APA. “It is important to join the World Trade Organization (WTO). Accession to this organization will be beneficial to Azerbaijan,” said U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morningstar at the meeting with representatives of the member companies of the Caspian European Integration Business Club (CEIBC), APA reports. He said that WTO is a good way for economic reforms and will pave the way for the development of economy: “This organization is still powerful and contributes the economic development of 159 member states.”

The ambassador noted that the signing of the final investment decision on Shah Deniz-2 project is a result of the long-term negotiations among states and private companies: “This project means much for Azerbaijan.”

According to him, Azerbaijan will now become not only oil, but also gas supplier, which is important for the sovereignty and independence of the country:

“Every country should have the opportunity to choose what way to go both in economy and politics.”

Richard Morningstar said natural resources help Azerbaijan diversify its economy, develop other spheres. He called on Azerbaijan to continue strengthening legal institutions, increase domestic investments and develop small and medium businesses.

“Strong development has been observed in the country within the history of 20-year independence. I came to Baku in 1995, amazing changes have happened since then. But these changes should be continued. Fortunately, resources allow this to both the state and private sector. Azerbaijan has opportunities to become a more significant country,” he said.

Honorary membership certificate was handed to the Ambassador at the end of the meeting.
