Baku-APA. A cease-fire between government forces and independence-seeking insurgents reached last week has been proved effective, a Ukrainian government spokesman said Wednesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"The current cease-fire regime is effective. We benefit from it in at least three dimensions," said Andrei Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council.

He told a press briefing that the truce has allowed government forces to release the prisoners of war and civilian captives, strengthen the position of military units and gather more information about the situation in the region.

Lysenko said that no servicemen had been killed in the past day in the eastern regions.

The cease-fire deal was inked by the representatives of Ukraine's government and insurgent leadership on Friday in Minsk, Belarus, to pave the way for a solution to the Ukraine crisis and a permanent end to the bloodshed in eastern Ukraine.

Clashes between Ukrainian government troops and militia, which started in mid-April, have claimed about 3,000 lives, with hundreds of thousands of other people displaced.
