"The biometric passport will cost almost half the price of an ordinary passport," Petrenko told a media briefing.

The so-called digital passports would be manufactured at the state-run Kiev-based printing plant "Ukraina" and be distributed through more than 50 administrative service centers across the country, Petrenko said.

The minister said he hoped biometric passports would gain popularity among Ukrainians as they would make it easier for their holders to receive visas from European Union member states.

The e-passports will contain, in addition to the normal paper-based information, a non-contact electronic data chip with passport biometric data, including ID number, digital images and digital signature.

According to preliminary calculations, the digital passport would cost about 14 U.S. dollars and could last for 10 years.
