Baku-APA. At least two civilians were killed and 13 others injured in overnight shelling in Ukraine's eastern city of Donetsk, the press service of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council said Monday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
According to council spokesman Andrei Lysenko, the fighting caused casualties among government forces in the past day.
One Ukrainian soldier was killed and 13 wounded during the confrontation with insurgents over the past 24 hours, Lysenko said.
Meanwhile, independence-seeking insurgents put the number of casualties among Ukrainian forces in the latest battles at "several dozen."
"Militia groups destroyed a battalion of the National Guard of Ukraine during the fighting in Donetsk airport," the rebel-run Novorossia news agency said.
Earlier in the day, the press service of the government's military operation said that Ukrainian troops repelled attacks on Donetsk airport, killing four insurgents.
The government-controlled airport in Donetsk has become a hot spot of fighting between Ukrainian forces and insurgents in recent weeks. Residential areas in Donetsk have also seen constant clashes between them.
According to the latest report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, more than 3,600 people have been killed and around 8,440 others wounded since the start of the violent conflict in eastern Ukraine in mid-April.
