The incident took place around 23:15, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.

Moscow police sources say there were witnesses to the shooting who are now being questioned, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.

"Today at approximately 11:15 PM Nemtsov was walking with a female companion, who is in town from Ukraine, along the Bolshoy Kamenniy bridge. A car approached, from which were fired several shots. Four shots hit Nemtsov in the back," Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson Elena Alekseeva said.

"The woman who was with him is at this moment being questioned at a police station."

An investigative committee spokesman says seven shots were fired.

Moscow police are engaged in an active search for the shooter or shooters, who have not been identified.

The incident took place around 23:40, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.

An unknown person shot and killed Boris Nemtsov on St. Basil’s slope (near Red Square) by four shots from a handgun.

A team of operatives and investigators is working at spot of the crime.
