This step will strengthen Russia’s position in the South Caucaus,” said former Russian ambassador to Armenia Vyacheslav Kovalenko addressing the international conference entitled “The geopolitical consequences of August war: lessons and problems” at Russia's Institute for Strategic Studies, APA’s Moscow correspondent reports. He said that the attempts of Europe, generally of the West to take Armenia out of Russia’s influence failed.

Vyacheslav Kovalenko, who was Russia’s ambassador to Georgia during August war in 2008, said that the United States has spent millions of dollars on anti-Russian propaganda in the South Caucasus: “The U.S. is carrying out anti-Russian propaganda influencing the civil society. If Moscow wants to be present in the South Caucasus, it must have impact on civil societies. It should create pro-Russian non-governmental organizations in these countries and strengthen work in this area. Without this it will be difficult for Russia in the South Caucasus.”

Addressing the conference, Eduard Popov, Director of the Black Sea - Caspian Region Centre for Information and Analysis of the Russian Institute of Startegic Studies (RISS), after the events of 2008, Russia partly strengthened its position in the Caucasus: “The U.S. is trying to take the Middle East and South Caucasus out of Russia’s influence and using any methods for this. But the course of events shows that the U.S. will not achieve this goal.”

In his speech, professor of the North Ossetian State University, political analyst Albert Dudayti said the reason why Russia’s position has weakened in the South Caucasus is Turkey: “Today, Turkey has a strong influence in the South Caucasus. This country, a strategic ally of Georgia and Azerbaijan, is also able to have an impact on the processes in the North Caucasus. Turkey is promoting Islam in this region. It is an integral part of the plan to separate the Caucasus from Russia.”
