One worker at the Yuzhanaya mine was still missing following the explosion on Saturday, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said, adding that rescue operations were “difficult” due to a blaze that was triggered by the blast.

A total of 86 out of the 89 miners working at a depth of 440 meters (over 1,440 feet) were evacuated, local police noted.

According to healthcare officials, two workers were taken to hospital due to moderate injuries.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, the main federal investigating authority, has launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.

“Experts of the Investigative Committee have left for the site. They inspect the site, question the company’s staff and management, and study documents on explosion works,” said Alexander Shulga of the regional department of the Investigative Committee.

The fire was later extinguished while over 80 rescuers were searching for victims.
