Baku-APA. Law enforcers from the Interior Ministry, migration service, local authorities failed to take their duty to control illegal activities in Moscow marketplaces, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"How could it happen that the policemen stand still while their colleague were being beaten (by criminals)? Are they cowards?" Putin said at a meeting with law enforcement officials.

The President convened the meeting to discuss a recent incident in a Moscow market where migrant vendors and policemen scuffled.

Several policemen were seriously wounded when they came to arrest a man wanted for rape.

Tradesmen fought off and freed the suspect.

Moscow city police launched a massive crackdown on illegal migrants following the incident last Saturday.

On Wednesday, 980-strong police forces detained 1,400 illegal migrants, mostly Vietnamese, but also from several Central Asian and Middle East countries.

Chief of the district's police and his subordinates lost their jobs as a result of the incident.

Putin ordered the Interior Ministry to investigate why the policemen witnessing the mobs' attack on their colleagues did not come to help.

He suggested these policemen were paid by vendors to put a blind eye on their illegal activities.

Deputy head of the Investigative Committee, Vasily Piskaryov, promised Putin that investigators would probe corruptive relationships between vendors, the police and government controlling bodies.
