Baku-APA. Moscow sees a chance to make progress in the Iranian nuclear issue, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here Monday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

He made these remarks after a new Iranian envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said last week that Tehran was ready to remove ambiguity over its nuclear activities.

"Our position is that a good base has been laid for further progress in the last year and a half. Our Iranian colleagues are ready in particular to discuss with the Group of Six termination of their 20-percent uranium enrichment," Lavrov told reporters.

He described that development as "a very important step."

The Group of Six, or Sextet, comprises the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

According to the Russian top diplomat, the West should lift sanctions on Tehran as an "adequate response" to Iran's gesture.

Moscow appreciated the readiness of the new Iranian leadership to guarantee higher transparency of their nuclear program, Lavrov said.

He stressed that Russia recognizes Iran's right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy but the Iranian nuclear program must be put under IAEA control.
