Editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Igor Guzhva has confirmed the death of the journalist on Facebook. He said Veremei and his colleague were travelling home from work by taxi when they were brutally assaulted.
The car came under attack as it pulled up at a crossroads. A group of unidentified people began to rock the vehicle, then dragged the taxi driver and the passengers out and beat them up. The journalist was also apparently fired at and later died of a gunshot wound to the stomach. Two other men were badly injured.
