Baku-APA. Kazakhstan's former Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov was charged with corruption and put under house arrest on court order, the press service of the Agency for Civil Service Affairs and Anti-Corruption said here Wednesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Serik Akhmetov was the governor of Karaganda region central Kazakhstan from 2009 to 2012.

The Agency had been also investigating a number of serious corruption cases against former executives of the Karaganda region and Karaganda city, including former governor of the Karaganda Region Baurzhan Abdishev, former mayor of the Karaganda city Meiram Smagulov, the directors of Civic-Oriented Entrepreneurial Corporation Saryarka, Industrial Park "Metallurgy and Metalwork" and a number of other officials.

"Within the cases, Mr. Serik Akhmetov, born in 1958, is also charged. A district court of Karaganda city approved a pre-trial restriction against him, which means house arrest," said the official of the anti-corruption agency.

No more information on the case was given for legal reasons.

Akhmetov was born on June 25, 1958 in Temirtau of Karaganda region. He was appointed as Kazakhstan's Prime Minister in 2012. But earlier this year he resigned and was appointed as the Defense Minister, only to resign again in October.
