Baku-APA. Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti on Friday appointed Deputy Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega as the acting prime minister, to head the caretaker government until a new cabinet is sworn in, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The move was taken after Valeriu Strelet presented earlier the resignation of the government to the head of state. The coalition government was dismissed Thursday through a no-confidence vote in parliament put forward by lawmakers of opposition Communists and Socialists.

"The best thing is to unite society and to swiftly form a pro-European government," stated Brega after the appointment, explaining that he can't have ambitious plans because an acting prime minister is limited in his acts.

Moldova experienced a political crisis in recent weeks, due to serious conflict within the three-party governing coalition composed of the Liberal Democratic Party, the Democratic Party and the Liberal Party.

In the Thursday no-confidence vote in parliament, only the Liberal Democratic lawmakers led by the then prime minister voted against the motion, while the Democrats stood together with the opposition and the Liberal lawmakers abstained.

Leader of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu called on the pro-European parties and the unaffiliated lawmakers to begin negotiations on the formation of a new pro-European ruling alliance, yet the Liberal Democrats announced that they will not take part in the negotiations.

According to local analysts, it is difficult to set up a new pro-European government without the involvement of the Liberal Democratic Party, as they can not get a simple majority of parliament.

The Moldovan 101-seat parliament consists of MPs (members of the parliament) of five politic parties, as well as five independent lawmakers. The Socialists have 24 seats, the communists 21 seats, while the three pro-European parties the Liberal Democrats, the Democrat and the Liberal have 19, 19 and 13 seats respectively.
