Crimean Tatars leader: We can not resist to the Russian troops

"Of course, we do not recognize this aggression. We support the protection of the territorial integrity of our country, Ukraine. We boycotted the referendum held by aggressive forces on March 16. Not only we, but ethnic Ukrainians and Russians boycotted the referendum. As far as we know, only 5% of the Crimean Tatars voted. The official authorities claim that officially 82% of Crimean population voted; but in fact we do have evidence that only 32.4% of Crimean people voted,” he said.

Kirimoglu had a chance to plead his case in a conversation with the Russian president himself, Vladimir Putin, before Crimea held its referendum.

“We had half an hour talk. I told Mister Putin that we do not accept this planned, forthcoming referendum.”

"As to how far the Russians could go, I think it would be imprudence by Russia. Because there is a decision of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. It is not important if our army is weaker than the Russian army. If their army moves forward, we will fire. This is hardly in the interest of Russia, or Putin. We can not rule out anything. But all this will lead to bloodshed. Therefore, Crimean Tatars Assembly has asked the UN to deploy its contingent in Crimea. I’m confident that if we were a nuclear power, that wouldn’t have happened," he said.
