Baku. Rashad Suleymanov – APA. 5000 citizens of Armenian origin from of Georgia's Akhalkelek (Javakheti) district have secretly obtained Armenian citizenship.

This fact was revealed during the last elections. The Armenians said that they decided to adopt Armenian citizenship to be able to travel to Russia freely and to get work there, APA reports citing Epress website.

Georgian Rustavi-2 TV channel’s report says that all those who gained Armenian citizenship, lost the citizenship of Georgia. According to the legislation of Georgia, a citizen will automatically lose Georgian citizenship after obtaining citizenship of other country. S/he should appeal to the Georgian President for dual citizenship.

"Echo of the Caucasus" radio reports citing local media that the people of Javakheti, trying to solve the problem, announced the collection of signatures led by the former deputy of the Georgian parliament Melik Raisyan. They ask to allow them to live in Georgia without having its citizenship.

Armenia’s pro-opposition media outlets reported that Georgian citizens of Armenian origin came by busses with “Republican Party supporters from Javakheti” words written on them and cast votes with the Armenian passports. That motorcade was accompanied with Javakheti’s police chief's son Gevorg.
