“The Mariupol city police have been put on alert, and an investigative team from the city police department is working at the scene now,” he said.
The press center of the special operation in eastern Ukraine confirmed the reports on the shelling of Mariupol, saying that the militia fired "Grad multiple rocket launchers to shell the eastern outskirt of Mariupol."
The engagement area includes residential neighborhoods, a private housing community, and a market in the city's Ordzhonikidzevsky district. The residents are trying to flee the area under fire. Denis Gavrilov, deputy chief of the city’s defense staff, said that according to intelligence, there is no large-scale attack plan on the city for now.
Note that, Mariupol is of extreme economic and military-strategic importance. Situated on the north coast of the Sea of Azov, the city has a population of 500,000. Mariupol is also a major port city and important metallurgy and machine-building center of Ukraine. It’s rumored that separatists and the Russian Army will soon try to capture Mariupol for its economic potential and in order to get ground access to Crimea. The city is being defended by Ukrainian armed units as well as the Azov regiment and the Dnepr-1 battalion.
