Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council Dmitry Medvedev warned on Thursday that the country would take measures in the Baltic region if Sweden and Finland decide to join NATO, APA reports citing Teletrader.

"It will be no big difference to Russia, just a few more opponents," he claimed.

Medvedev explained that there could be no more talks of a nuclear-free Baltic in case these two countries take steps to become a part of NATO. The balance would have to be restored, he stressed, hinting Russia could relocate nuclear capacities to its northwestern territories.

The remarks came in after it was revealed the governments of Finland and Sweden have been considering applying for NATO membership. Finland is expected to decide on the matter "within weeks," while Sweden is said to be seeking to apply to join the bloc in June.
