Russia revokes citizenship of nearly 800 foreigners amid expanded legal grounds

The citizenship of nearly 800 foreigners in Russia has been revoked, APA's Moscow bureau reports, citing the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

It was stated that, during the first six months of this year, 790 foreigners have been stripped of their subsequently acquired Russian Federation citizenship.

Note that on August 1 of this year, President Vladimir Putin signed a law expanding the list of grounds for deprivation of Russian citizenship. According to the law, deprivation of citizenship may occur due to the following reasons: Committing acts of sexual violence; Public calls for terrorism, justification of terrorism, or propaganda of terrorism; Covert cooperation with another state, international, or foreign organization aimed at undermining Russia’s security; Assisting in the implementation of decisions by international organizations or foreign state bodies in which Russia does not participate; Aiding an enemy in activities directed against Russia’s security; Public calls for carrying out such activities; Promotion of Nazi elements or symbols; Unlawful influence on the country’s most critical information infrastructure.

In addition, the following offenses will also result in the revocation of citizenship: Homicide, Committing improper acts against a child, Engaging in sexual relations with a person who has reached the age of 12 but has not yet reached the age of 14, Involving a minor in prostitution, Organizing prostitution with the participation of a minor, Producing or distributing materials containing pornographic depictions of minors, As well as using a minor for the production of pornographic materials.

At the same time, the list includes acts of sexual violence such as gang rape or with particular cruelty or as a result of infection with a venereal disease, coercion of a minor to perform sexual acts, crimes committed by an organized group via the Internet or against the sexual integrity of a minor.

Organization of illegal migration and any other crime committed for extremist reasons or to justify terrorism or sabotage will also be grounds for deprivation of citizenship of the Russian Federation.
