Putin says proposal to restore Stalingrad name for Volgograd should be considered at regional level

Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to consider the issue of returning the name Stalingrad to Volgograd, said Putin while commenting on the initiative at a meeting with the heads of the State Duma factions, APA's Moscow bureau reports.

"We need to think about it," the Russian President emphasized.

At the same time, Putin noted that the issue of returning Volgograd to its previous name should be resolved at the regional level.

Note that the "Veterans of Russia" public movement sent Putin a petition proposing that Volgograd be renamed Stalingrad. Activists believe that returning the old name to Volgograd will attract more tourists.

The congress of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation also addressed Putin with a similar proposal. The Russian President previously did not rule out the possibility of changing the name of Volgograd to Stalingrad. In his opinion, the name change is possible only if the majority of the city's residents decide on it.

Putin previously supported the idea of renaming Volgograd airport "Stalingrad".
