Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia has always opposed Ukraine’s membership in NATO, but not its integration with the European Union, APA reports.
Speaking at a press conference concluding his visit to China, Putin said that Ukraine has the right to choose its own security system, but this should not come at Russia’s expense.
Putin added that Russia does not link security guarantees for Ukraine to territorial issues. “Russia is not fighting over territory, but for the right of people to speak their own language and live in their own culture. Russia has never suggested that Ukraine could receive security guarantees in exchange for territory. The opinions of people choosing to live within Russia must be respected — that is democracy,” he said.
