Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has identified two candidates he prefers for the post of possible successor to the Catholicos of All Armenians, Zhokhovurd wrote, citing its sources, APA reports.
According to the publication, the Primate of the Western Diocese, Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, who lives in the United States, and the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, Aram I, are being considered as the main candidates. The authorities believe that they will remain loyal to him until it becomes clear how the situation will develop.
The article notes that “the current authorities may create a new “free field” and redistributed influence in the Armenian Church after the end of the powers of Garegin II.”
The newspaper’s sources report that the power structures have already begun to make individual “visits” to the leaders of the dioceses, including those who discredited the Catholicos and signed or did not sign the statement distributed after the bishops’ meeting.
