Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev has compared the situation in Donbas with the situation in 2008 in Georgia, APA's Moscow bureau reports.

He noted that things that happen in Donbas are more complicated than the things that happened in Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 2008.

"I well remember 2008, when the decision was made to recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia. It is clear that this has saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who live in these territories. There are more things at risk today, there are more lives. We know what will happen after that. We know about sanctions. We know there are pressures. But we also know how to respond. It will not be easy, but if we manage the situation properly and act patiently under the leadership of our President, they will get tired and come back to us to discuss strategic security and stability. If the situation continues like this, I think that Russia should recognize the independence of the Donbas republics. Experience shows that if this happens, the tense situation there will calm down. This is the president's decision. As far as I know, most Russians will support it," said  Dmitry Medvedev.
