Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the US administration recognizes the necessity of addressing the root causes of the Ukraine conflict, including Kyiv’s potential NATO accession, APA’s Moscow correspondent reports.
Lavrov added that Americans understand that residents of Crimea, Donbass, and Novorossiya will never live under the current Kyiv government. “The US understands that human rights violations in Ukraine are unacceptable,” he said.
He also criticized Europe and Kyiv for trying to force former US President Trump to abandon peace efforts and disrupt the settlement in Ukraine. Lavrov compared European leaders to the “pike vests” characters from Ilf and Petrov’s novel — irresponsible figures who enjoy appearing important.
Lavrov further noted that peacekeepers in Ukraine are effectively “occupying forces” and will be legitimate targets for Russian military personnel.
