The European Union is assisting Armenia in diversifying its energy sector, and is also working on the Armenia-Türkiye power transmission line, said EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos at a meeting with Armenian journalists in Brussels, APA reports, citing Armenpress.

The Commissioner said that according to the document signed in Tashkent, Armenia will receive support within the framework of the “Caucasus Power Grid” project to improve its energy infrastructure, strengthen energy security and diversification, and reduce dependence on foreign players.

“We signed a document on a project worth 500 million euros in Tashkent. This is an investment of 500 million euros to connect your energy system with the energy system of Georgia, and we are already working on the Armenia-Türkiye energy system. Why? Because it is necessary to minimize your energy dependence on Russia. This stems from our own experience. When the war began in 2022, Europe imported 60% of gas, 50% of coal and 40% of oil from Russia. Now coal — 0, oil — 0, and we are gradually approaching zero for gas. This process is not always easy, as you know very well,” said Marta Kos.

It is reported that the goal of the “Caucasus Power Grid” project is to ensure reliable, flexible, and mutually beneficial cross-border energy exchange in the South Caucasus through the synchronization of the energy networks of Armenia and Georgia.
