Armenian media reported on Thursday that Mkrtich Mkrtchyan, the brother of Armenia’s newly appointed ambassador to the United States, Narek Mkrtchyan, has been detained on suspicion of illegal possession of narcotics, APA reports.
According to the outlet Armlur, Mkrtchyan was taken into custody late Wednesday night in Parakar, where police allegedly found small packets of drugs and a firearm in his possession.
Journalist Suzi Badoyan said the items were discovered during a search of his pockets.
The Armenian Interior Ministry has not yet commented on the case.
Narek Mkrtchyan was recently appointed ambassador to Washington, replacing Lilit Makunts, who was recalled from the post. He previously served as Armenia’s minister of labor and social affairs.
